Tommy Miller - finished a 15 mile run today. heading for a short hike in the hills this afternoon. I will own G3 Saturday!
Don Amos how long did the run take???
Tommy Miller 2 hrs 15 minutes.
Don Amos solid
Tommy Miller I'm spitting blood now
Don Amos pussy
Staci Miller Dear No Pain Miller, the Canyon will weep at our feet!
Patience Lam I am crazy jealous of that amazing time....do not kill Staci this weekend....I would miss her
Brandon Foster You are a machine Miller!
Tommy Miller That's what the ladies say.
Tommy Miller Sister Staci will not be killed. Mangled yes but not killed.
Jamie Miller Malsam Well....wish I could say I was one of those Millers, but unfortunately or maybe fortunately I will be waiting to hear the results from my couch while eating doughnuts and possible potato oles!! I need an intervention!! Good luck to you guys though!!
Brandon Foster Stupid question - what is G3?
Tommy Miller Its short for R3.
Brandon Foster That's what meant - R3. WTF?
Tommy Miller Grand Canyon hike rim-to-rim-to-rim. 45 mile, 22,000 ft elevation change in 24 hours. Stupid New Years resolution.
R3, hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim, The Death March.... A hike not for the faint of heart. Four of us will start this adventure the weekend of October 2nd. 40+ miles with more than 20,000 feet of elevation change as we start at the south rim make our way to the north rim and back - all under 24 hours. After all, if we do not make it in less than 24 hours, it is just a 2 day hike in the Grand Canyon.

One last web site to check out while you are packing food for the trip.
http://www.ultrarunning.com/ultra/features/health/fueling-rim-to-rim-to-rim.shtml
The rest is all mental!!!!!!!!!!!
See you soon.
Staci Miller
Great web site Staci. Mental 60% physical 40% if you think you can you will ! Do not compete against time ! Time will take care of itself ! I will be on the Trail Head north and south rim with vehicle to cart your tired, sore, aching bodies to the Shower and Hot Tub at the motel or laundry mat.
P.S. you will stink and all the bad stuff you put in your bodies will be reeking out on the surface !
Just got off the computer weather on top of GC for SAT High 81 night time 45 feels like 38 with 30% change of rain thunderstorms. Gust at night up to 20 MPH. YOU will be hiking on Bright Angle trail coming out at night Possibly Lightening at night !!!!! Temp increases 4 degree for ever 1000 feet drop of elevation. At Phatom Ranch should be 100 degrees probably by 1.00 pm. That should be incentive for early start. Daylight at 6:18 am and Sunset @ 6.30 pm. Pack, drink, eat and dress accordingly. L&L Tom
p.s. Remember rim to rim is a great achievement and I will be there on the north rim to give any hiker a ride back to the south rim, if needed. One last thought, grab some duct tape and make a couple wraps on the belt of your pack just in case a hot blister pops up . You can tape over them for added protection and pain relief!!!!

Rule #1
Rule #1 old shoes - new socks!!!!
I broke rule #1 yesterday. I did not double check my hiking socks (my favorite hiking socks had all the miles they could take) Not checking your socks equates to one healthy blister. Better yesterday than next week but lesson learned. Double check, triple check, quadruple check your socks prior to R3.
Less than a week til R3...let the countdown continue!!

Epiphany for a blister free foot
So, yesterday during my 5 mile training run, I had an epiphany!! Last time I hiked the Canyon, I had blisters as big as quarters on my toes - nasty, hurtful, fun-hating blisters. What if these next few weeks of training, I switch shoes every day or so. Each shoe rubs and wears differently, making my feet tougher more durable and potentially blister free. Hmmmm, I'm going to give it a shot. Anything is better than quarter sized blisters!!!

Thoughts
I wake up thinking about R3; I go to bed thinking about R3. If mental training has any influence on the outcome of this adventure, I will be well prepared. In my head, I have made check lists of what to take on the hike and what NOT to take on the hike. I remember the pain, the exhaustion, muscle soreness, and the mental weariness as I swore to myself I would never make the rim to rim hike again. Now, in just three short weeks, we will be doing rim to rim to rim - "R3"!!! I would be lying if I said I am not concerned.
I also remember the pride, sense of accomplishment, and excitement as I climbed those last few feet up the Kaibab trail on the north rim. There is no way to describe the level of satisfaction when you have pushed your body to the limit and obtained your goal. It is magnificent!!!!
Now, at age 40, I weigh in at the same weight I was in highschool and I am in the best shape of my life. I am ready to tackle this R3 challenge in which only a handful of people in the world can claim accomplishment.
When I turned 40 years old last October, I promised myself with this new milestone, I would accomplish something intellectual, something physical, and visit a location I had never been before. The year was rich with accomplishments. I taught a college course online, I ran seven half marathons and one full marathon in a year's time, and had the opportunity to travel to multiple new locations throughout the United States.
To end the year, 18 days short of my 41st birthday, I will hike over 40 miles with more than 20,000 foot elevation change with my brother as my hiking partner. My Dad, my inspirational motivator for goal accomplishment, will be there to see us off, meet us at the north rim, and be back at the south rim as we walk the last few, tortuous feet of the "Death March" out of the Canyon.
R3, rim to rim to rim, the Death March in less than 24 hours. "After all, if it is completed in 24 hours and 1 minute, it is really only a nice two day hike in the Grand Canyon."

R3 on three seperate occasions
http://www.dayhiker.com/directory/Grand-Canyon-hike-rim-rim-rim-index.htm
L&L Dad
OK you ultra dudes remember I will be on the north rim with encouragement, praise, concern , humor and tears along with my camera!!!
Do not be embarrassed or dejected if a rim to rim is all you body can stand I have done it twice south to north and again with JR north to south it is absolutely brutal and fulfilling on a rim to rim. Both times I did it I was at the + 14 hour range first time solo and second time with JR help , company and along the way met at bottom of canyon daughter Staci grand daughters Keisha and Tasha. They where doing a south to north hike and than take our car driving back to south rim and join us in the hot tub but that is a 4 hour 220 mile drive around in addition to there 14 hour of rim to rim hike.
I have been told or read that approximately 36,000 people hike the GC yearly and only 3,000 actually do a rim to rim. Now think about 305,000,000 MILLION Americans that most have the ability to walk and have never never taken on a ultra hike that your contemplating!!! YOU will become a ELITE Number to all that know you and they will whisper did you know what that crazy SOB did On Oct 2, 2010. My hat and respect are off to all of you. Read and study what JR has sent Read and study what these two hikers have learned in 3 attempts and completion. Each one of you will have your own threshold or Bonks do not let that overwhelm you.
Hike safe and smart remember water/feet/food or WFF without proper care you will condem YOURSELF.

The Invite

Hikers,
Anyone who wants to view one of the most scenic areas in the world, come join us. Any & all...so feel free to invite anyone else not on the list. Staci and Tommy will be going R3 which is going to rank as one of the dumbest things we have ever done. Possibly R3 will out rank paying $20 to bungee jump in Mexico. R3 is dangerous and as Staci mentioned, is an extreme hike with a lot of dangers while your body is stressed beyond comprehension. These dangers include twisting an ankle or possibly getting snake bit (rare). Much training is necessary. Much money is needed if you need a helicopter ticket out of the canyon. Wait....Obamacare will make that free.
If R3 is not for you, I encourage you to come anyway for a couple day hikes at your pace and at your physical fitness level. R2 is another option for you as Tom Sr. will be meeting us at the North Rim via rental car. If you want to do short hikes, you have an option to hit part of the South Rim then hitch a ride to catch a bit of the North Rim. Lot's of options and you are free to choose.
The historic list
I will label this as Tony and Tom Tricks and Tips for hiking the Grand
Canyon starting from the head to your toes and also some of the
equipment needed.
Head= tie you hair back get it off your neck, lather up with plenty of
sun tan lotion (30 or better) especially around and the top of your
ears, use head protection hat or a cap that is polyester that breaths,
Quote Mitch (cotton kills stay away from use)!!
Eyes= sunglasses that protect your eyes on the side extreme glare safety
glasses will do and there cheap , use a string adjuster that will hold
your glasses tightly to your nose, you will get very sweaty and they
will slide down on your nose if you do not have that string that holds
the glasses tightly into place
Lips=lip gloss with UV protection and use it often, sweat, licking lips
and drinking water carries your protection away (USE REGULAR and OFTEN)
Neck=buy one of those scarves with the crystal in them and presoak with
water to wrap around your neck, they stay cool for 12 hours plus, again
use plenty of lotion on that neck
Shoulders=I cut a tee shirt off under the nipples and than
slashed it with a knife so that it could breath and give me that added
protection from the straps on the back pack, in addition to that I
purchased a hunting jacket that was open nylon mesh and yet quilted on
the shoulders camo in color, the numerous pocket on these kind of
jackets are a blessing for all things that are needed as you hike and
you take those short breaks before you get to the bottom (lip gloss,
lotion, pills Aleve, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, film, pocket knife,
small pin flash light)
Arms=stay cool by using long sleeve shirt that is polyester; prefer
white to reflect UV from the sun. Remember Mexicans in the beet field have
there arms covered to stay cool.
Hands=use sun tan lotion leave rings and jewelry at home, car or in the
back pack trim nails on fingers before leaving. Walking sticks prefer
two it will help maintain balance on the trail suggestion (garage sale
ski poles leave the cup on the bottom on you will be walking thru sand it
will keep them from going to deep, camera tripod and remove legs for
your walking sticks they are adjustable you will than have to add nylon
straps or leather grips or bicycle rubber hand grips) you will have so
much weight on your back that it pushes you forward and it will transfer
some of that weight of your back pack into your arms I’m guessing about
10%. So if you and the pack weight of 175 pounds that means your arms
will be carrying 18 pounds and believe me that is a blessing!!
Breast= for women use sports bra or equivalent
Waist=men and women use a wide nylon belt that will give, stretch and
keep your pants or shorts up. You will have a lot of weight and you
will want something snug but that will give as you walk and won’t cut
into your hips.
Butt= women and men use boxer shorts again you want them not to chafe
your cracks or your inside thighs also Vaseline your privates
Legs=wear long pants that are polyester if you wear polyester shorts
keep those legs front and back lotion up, you will get extremely dirty
with shorts because of the dust on the trail and there is no water going
down on south Kabab to clean up
Feet=buy a bottle of new skin and paint on heels, side, tops of toes or
anyplace that you might think of that will cause blister, remember your
feet are the most important assets you have because this trip will be
the most physical experience you will have because of that 40 to 50
pounds in your back pack, hiking socks that will wick the water out,
hiking boots that are either ¾ or higher well broke in ( use them mowing
grass going to the store or gardening that will help breaking them in
by giving them that toe flex that you will need, buy now if you do not
have a pair. Use only one pair of socks if you use two they will wad up
rub and give you misery or worst yet a blister, and you will be hiking
out in two days. Helicopter out $3,500 to $10,000 dollars so stay on
the inside of the trail there sure as the hell aren’t any guard rails!!
Toes=trim and groom those nails your feet and toes will be flattening
out and pushing forward in your shoes, remember going down every step
forward is a step down in this hike that is about 7 miles down you will
descend on horse shoe trails or pig trails or cork screws trails about
5000 feet to the Colorado River or Phantom Ranch (camping area) GOAL for
the first day!!
So have fun don’t bitch but keep your buddies informed on your physical
condition because believe me it will deteriorate rapidly on this hike.
THINK SAFETY and PRACTICE SAFETY and use your buddy as a sounding
board!! Remember this is not a race going down stop and look at what
God has created with the help of Mother Nature. You will never be the
same after this completed hike believe me. Stop and take pictures
especially of your hiking party you may in the future hike it again but
you will never hike it with the same partners. I feel that Tony and I
were blessed to share this and I’m so excited that some of the other
family members can make it with the next trip to bond with cousins and
friends. I would love and requesting a copy of all digital pictures so
when I’m at the old folk are home or sitting in my hot tub I will have
something to watch instead of reruns of all in the Family or Mash!!
HAHAHAH !!

The Plan
Due to the extreme hike we are going to do in 1 month time, my opinion is that we need to pair up. Always keep an eye on your hiking buddy. Based on each pair's physical fitness level, each G3 pair can then hike at their speed. No matter what, each G3 pair needs to keep an eye on each other. Think of it as a dive buddy for you scuba divers. The pairs are as follows:
(1) Staci & Tommy
(2) Don & Neil
The G3 pairs are also in affect while drinking beer. If your hiking buddy passes out due to over consumption, then you must continue to consume until you pass out. The G3 pair who are the last ones out of the canyon, have to buy the drinks for everyone else and be the beer %itches for everyone else too. But keep in mind, this is not a race. Unless you don't like being a beer %itch.

Confirmed Hikers,
Great to know there are crazy people other than me. 1 month from now we will be wondering what the heck we were thinking. But the trip will be nothing you have ever seen or done before.
The following people have confirmed GC:
